Online quoting launched

Access to the widest insurance cover at the most competitive premiums is now even easier for golf clubs with the launch of a new online quoting system.

Golf clubs can ask their insurance broker to obtain a quote through the Australian Golf Insurance website – www.australiangolfinsurance.com with an immediate response in most cases.

Australian Golf Insurance is the specialist golf programme that was launched last year by Golf Australia and Lloyd’s insurer Sportscover and offers bespoke cover for golf club property, liability, professional indemnity, management liability and voluntary workers risks. At the time of launching the programme Golf Australia CEO, Stephen Pitt, said that it would help give clubs some peace of mind.

“The Australian Golf Insurance programme provides Golf Australia and the States the ability to minimise risk for all Australian golf clubs and golfers, something we as an industry have been striving towards for some time,” Pitt said.

“This is a unique offering which provides all golf clubs in Australia the ability to obtain broad suitable cover as well as the ability to choose which broker they wish to deal with. No longer do clubs need to go to a single insurance broker to receive benefits that our buying power can generate.”

However, until now quotes under the programme were obtained by the club’s insurance broker contacting sportscover’s underwriters. Now they can receive a quote electronically after registering on the site.

Sportscover CEO, Chris Nash, said “The programme has been hugely successful since its launch last year. However, we wanted to make it even easier for clubs to obtain this specialist programme and so we have introduced the on-line quoting system”.

The on-line quoting system is available now and clubs and their brokers can obtain more details at www.australiangolfinsurance.com or by emailing This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Queensland clubs allocated funding

Golf Queensland and Golf Australia today announced the allocation of over $472,000 to Queensland golf clubs and PGA members.

The Golf Industry Recovery Fund was initiated by Golf Australia immediately following the Queensland floods in January and raised nearly $500,000.

Golf Queensland Chair Tom Crothers said 18 golf clubs and one PGA member had submitted applications for assistance.

“Golf Queensland and Golf Australia are pleased to be able to provide the funding back to the industry after such a tough six months,” Mr Crothers said.

“The funding will allow many Queensland clubs to get the additional help they need following the devastating floods and cyclone.”

Golf Australia Chairman John Hopkins said the assistance provided by the industry was very generous.

“We're grateful for the support from Australian golfers, clubs and the international bodies for the affected clubs and communities,” Mr Hopkins said.

"That generosity has ensured we can assist Queensland golf clubs in their recovery and we fully support it."

Mr Crothers said Golf Queensland had facilitated the process and called for applications from Queensland clubs and PGA members outlining the project costs associated with the recovery. A panel assessed the applications and also conducted several on-course visits before allocating the funding.

“We have distributed most of the money raised but some of it is pending the outcome of clubs applying for Queensland Government funding,” Mr Crothers said.

“Some clubs have had money allocated to their projects pending the success of their QRAA applications and the payment of capitation fees.

“If clubs receive their full QRAA grant funds and no longer need the Golf Industry Funding, we will be in a position to re-open the process for a second round.”

Mr Crothers said Golf Queensland had also provided emergency financial support of over $46,000 to nine golf clubs and the Australian Golf Course Superintendents Association.

“Golf Queensland realised, in many cases, clubs had to close their doors for weeks, even months because of the wet season,” Mr Crothers said.

“It was important to get the doors of Clubs open for business and we offered financial support immediately to assist those clubs to get back up and running as soon as possible.”

Mr Crothers said Golf Queensland had also provided support for several clubs through Golf Queensland’s Grants Writing Assistance Program

Aussies Extend Lead

Australia has extended its lead after the second round of the Nomura Cup in Fiji.

The Australian team of Jake Higginbottom, Daniel Bringolf, Marika Batibasaga and Cameron Smith returned an aggregate score of 4 under par, for a 36-hole total of 13 under par 419. Defending champions Korea stormed up the leaderboard recording a 3 under total for the second round to sit in second place on 431. India sits in third place on 434, with New Zealand fourth 435.

The Vijay Singh designed Natadola Bay layout tested the players with its extreme rough off the fairways, however with conditions kind to the players, scoring under par was possible. The Australians played consistently in an attempt to reassert its dominance in the Asia-Pacific region after finishing in sixth position when the event was last played in 2009.

Australia Team Manager, Matt Cutler said, “We are very pleased with today’s scores. The team all showed great patience around this demanding course.”

Cameron Smith remains the individual leader with another sub-par round of 71, for a 6 under total of 138. Fellow countryman Jake Higginbottom is second, one shot behind. Overnight leader Li Haotong of China returned an 80 to slip down the leaderboard.

Round three will be played at Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course, with the final round to be played at Denarau Golf and Racquet Club.

Long road to play Golf.

Golf Western Australia has ventured in to the heart of the Pilbara region in 2011 as part of its program to provide a course rating for every golf course in Western Australia.

Last year the focus was on the metropolitan clubs, south west country clubs, and public courses while this year the focus is on getting every country club rated.

Paraburdoo Golf Club (pictured) is one of those courses.

Located 1,500 kilometres North East of Perth, Paraburdoo is in the Shire of Ashburton and is named after the nearby 'Pirraburdoo' lease, an aboriginal name for the white "Little Corella" which lives in the area.

The Shire of Ashburton, at nearly half the size of the state of Victoria (105,647 square km), boasts some of the world's largest open cut mines, largest pastoral leases and cattle stations and a thriving fishing industry all set against a beautiful and ancient arid tropical landscape.

The team of Golf WA volunteers, led by Di Monk, has completed 124 of some 250 courses in Western Australia to date.

The completion date for the course rating project is anticipated to be September 2011.

Perth set for revamped Series

Royal Perth Golf Club and The Western Australian Golf Club are primed to host the new-look Australian Men’s and Women’s Interstate Teams Matches, to be played from 13-16 September.

The Championships, which in recent years have involved teams from each State contesting foursomes and singles match play, will for the first time see a Final contested between the two teams who finish with the most contest wins after five rounds of singles match play only.

The introduction of the Final will ensure an exciting conclusion to the event, and will further develop our elite golfers in requiring them to play in a pressure situation.

Manager of Golf Australia’s amateur championships, Therese Ritter said, “It is a new era for the event, and whilst retaining the traditional match play format, we look forward to the Final injecting some real excitement into the competition.

“We also need to be mindful of the well-being of our elite players. They now compete in so many events around Australia and the world, the removal of the foursome matches in the new format reduces the event duration, which is a major consideration in today’s environment,” Ritter said.

The Championship will continue to have the top six women and top eight men from each State competing for the oldest Australian amateur golf team trophies. The women will play for the Gladys Hay Memorial Trophy on an extended Western Australian layout at Yokine, while the men will tee off at last year’s Handa Australian Senior Open venue, Royal Perth.

With Western Australia not having hosted the event since 2005, Perth is sure to witness some impressive golf.
